Why 18-Inch Walls Change How Every Room Is Designed
Most homes are built with walls about six inches thick. You never think about them, because there is nothing to think about. A wall is a flat plane that holds up the roof and divides one space from another. It disappears.
A straw bale wall is different before you ever consider insulation or fire resistance or any of the performance story. It is different because it is eighteen inches thick. And that one fact quietly changes how every room in the house gets designed.
I want to walk through what that thickness actually does, because it is one of the most underappreciated parts of building this way.

The window becomes a place
Start with a window. In a conventional wall, a window is a hole in a thin plane. The glass sits close to both faces, and the sill is a narrow ledge you can barely set a coffee cup on.
Punch that same window through eighteen inches of wall and something else happens entirely. Now there is depth. The window sits inside a substantial reveal, and the sill becomes a real surface, deep enough to be used. Plants live there. Books stack there. In a bedroom or a reading nook, that depth becomes a window seat, a place a person actually sits, not just a detail.
The window stops being a hole and becomes a place. Every window in the house gets this, automatically, because the wall is thick. It is not an upgrade you pay extra for. It comes with the wall.
Light lands differently
Thick walls also change how daylight enters a room. When a window is set deep into the wall, the reveal catches and softens the light as it comes in. Instead of a hard rectangle of sun hitting the floor, you get light that spreads and gentles as it moves across the depth of the opening.
Through the day, the sun moves across those deep reveals and the walls pick up soft, shifting shadows at every opening. It gives a room a quality that is hard to name but easy to feel. The light has somewhere to travel before it reaches you. Conventional walls are too thin to do this. The window is basically flush, so the light just arrives, flat.
A sense of shelter
There is also something your body registers walking into a room wrapped in thick walls, even before you notice the windows. The space feels held. Sheltered. The mass around you reads, at some level below conscious thought, as protection.
People describe it in different ways. Some say it feels calm. Some say solid, or grounded, or quiet. What they are responding to is the thickness. A thin-walled room and a thick-walled room can be the exact same dimensions and feel completely different to stand in. The thick one feels like it is holding you. That feeling is not decoration. It is structure you can sense.
And it is not only a feeling. At Squaw Butte, those same thick walls held enough heat that the home ran through January, February, and March of 2023 with zero mechanical heating. The mass that makes a room feel sheltered is the same mass that keeps it warm. You feel the one every day and pay for the other never.
Designing to use it
Because the thickness is there no matter what, good design leans into it rather than ignoring it. Deep sills get planned as usable surfaces. Certain windows get placed and sized specifically to become seats. Niches can be carved into the wall depth for shelving or display, something a six-inch wall simply cannot offer. The wall becomes a resource the design draws on, not just a boundary it works around.
This is one of the real advantages of designing the home and building the walls as one connected process. The people drawing the rooms understand exactly what the walls will give them, so the thickness gets used intentionally from the first sketch instead of discovered afterward.
The thickness is the point
It would be easy to see eighteen inches and think only about insulation value, and the insulation is real. But the thickness pays you back in ways that have nothing to do with energy. It gives you window seats without adding square footage. It gives you softer daylight for free. It gives you a felt sense of shelter in every room. It gives the design places to put things a thin wall never could.
None of that shows up on a spec sheet. All of it shows up the moment you walk through the door and run your hand along a windowsill deep enough to sit in. The walls are thick, and that thickness is not a side effect to design around. It is one of the best things about living in one of these homes.
